Donations
The South Madison Coalition of the Elderly was created more than 30 years ago, by local older adults wanting to improve their lives. They sought better ways to help themselves, and better means to assist their neighbors through times of need. Many members of the local community donated funds in order to help this effort succeed.
Over the years, the Coalition has grown as a non-profit agency and developed programs that are funded in part by government and the United Way. However, in order to maintain our services we continue to rely on regular donations from our neighbors. Your modest yearly contribution makes an important difference!
Donations help support programs like these:
Last year, volunteers in our home chore program logged 2623 hours assisting 120 seniors who could not have afforded to pay for help with housecleaning, raking or snow shoveling.
One result: Local resident Irene, who is 85, can continue to live in the home she has always had in our community.
Cost to co-ordinate the home chore program: $16.27 per hour.
We served 611 meals at our Sunday afternoon programs in 2007, where seniors enjoyed entertainment and bingo with dinner. Transportation was provided to a number of older adults who could not otherwise attend.
One result: 75-year-old Jim, who has a limited income and can no longer drive, is able to spend quality social time with old friends he might otherwise never see.
Cost for Sunday Afternoon Programs: $7.50 per meal.
Our free monthly Southside Senior newsletter provides information on activities and resources important to local seniors, with an average circulation of 1150 per month.
One result: Local seniors, staff of local agencies, and employees of local businesses stay up-to-date on information they might not otherwise learn about.
Cost for an older adult to receive a newsletter: $12.00 per year.
In 2007, 561 older adults received case management services from one of our social workers.
Some results: A case manager helped 60‑year-old Casey, who recently became disabled, do the complicated paperwork needed to obtain benefits and apply for programs that will help him remain independent. Another case manager helped the family of 81-year‑old Marie to arrange services enabling her to return home from a nursing facility after a stroke.
Cost to our agency for one hour of case management service: $55.00.
